Amsterdam's story is well told in the enjoyable Amsterdams historich Museum (Amsterdam Historical Museum). Once a monastery, and then a city orphanage for four centuries, the museum is now an elegant complex of bright and airy rooms. Highlights include a superb model of a Dutch East India sailing ship and the silver drinking horn of the medieval Guild of St. George. To the right of the entrance is the glass doorway into Schuttersgalerij. This was once an open street and is now the Civic Guard Gallery, with splendid group portraits of 17th century city militiamen.
